The Environment Secretary’s first set piece speech at WWF-UK’s The Living Planet Centre left a pretty strong impression on the environmental sector, it was full of promise, heavy on optimism, but gave no new detailed policy commitments. His vision for a ‘green Brexit’ criticised the current farming system for encouraging wastage and for not recognising good environmental practice. He also told the sector that he was prepared to create more effective, more rigorous and more responsive institutions, once the UK is outside the EU. One key issue which didn’t receive much attention in his speech was devolution, and how the post-Brexit devolution settlement will impact the environment. We then had the chlorinated chicken news coverage, which raised important issues relating to trade and animal welfare.
