The latest annual report from the Drinking Water Inspectorate shows that 99.97% of water samples in England complied with regulatory drinking standards in 2023.
Chief inspector Marcus Rink said: “Drinking water in England is amongst the most tightly regulated and best quality in the world. Water companies consistently meet the stringent regulatory standards.” But he added: “Whilst the report shows the excellent quality of drinking water for consumers in England, it is appropriate to highlight those areas requiring further improvement. The purpose of this is to ensure that there is continual investment, development, and enhancement, to benefit consumers and safeguard supplies for future generations.”
As the report covers 2023, it does not include recent drinking water incidents, including the boil water notice for some South West Water customers, which has now been lifted.
