About Ocean and Coastal Futures – our mission, vision and values
In a previous article, we set out who we are, what we do and what we believe in. We’ve now built on this thinking to define our vision, mission and values.
Firstly, our mission is bringing the ocean and coastal community together. This means we provide a focus and a voice for practitioners who are working in, on, around, and for the sea – from many different sectors. We help people in our sector expand their networks, stay informed, increase their knowledge and discover opportunities. And we work to support projects and policies that will lead the ocean and coastal environment towards a sustainable future.
Next, our vision is to be a respected and knowledge-driven organisation, with influence in the UK and around the world; to improve the coastal and marine environment and benefit coastal communities by supporting ecological recovery and sustainable development; and to be at the centre of marine and coastal knowledge and debate, forging connections and spreading knowledge.
Finally, we have defined a list of our values – the core beliefs and principles that guide OCF’s decisions and actions. They’re the foundation of our organisational culture, and a guide to how we expect our people to act. They are:
- Honesty: we tell the truth and amplify voices that should be heard
- Integrity: we value sustainability over profit
- Generosity: we create connections and promote opportunities that benefit the sector as a whole
- Equity: we believe in fairness and opportunities to reach an equal outcome
- Inclusiveness: we foster a sense of community and champion diversity
- Flexibility: we listen to a wide range of perspectives and work to find common ground.
Our mission, vision and values provide the foundation for our services to support coastal and marine practitioners throughout their career.
