UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) has published a response to the National Bioresources Strategy. The report looks at priorities for resource recovery opportunities, arguing that valuable constituents in wastewater and bioresources could provide resources and support the achievement of a circular economy and net zero carbon ambitions.

This project follows the Water UK report on ‘Developing a long-term strategy for bioresources in England’ which recommended prioritisation of recovered resources to enable a focus on technology and long-term strategies.
This project identified the need to understand market requirements and scalability of recovered resources.
A digital tool was developed to allow the prioritisation of resource recovery opportunities in Water and Sewerage Companies (WaSCs).
Priority resources activities were mapped, along with recovery options of these key resources allowing WaSCs to be better informed in their decision making on resource recovery opportunities and investment strategies.
Understanding the prioritisation of resources will be improved, aiding technology investment decisions and improving operations and maintenance costs of wastewater and sewage sludge treatment. This will contribute to circular economy, a reduction in carbon emissions and better management of resources.
